{geni:occupation} Count of Évreux, 2nd Count of Evreux, Archbishop of Rouen, Comte, d'Evreux, 2nd Count Evereux, Comte d'Évreux (27), Comte d'Evreux
{geni:about_me} Richard, Count of Évreux (d. 1067) was the son of Robert II the Archbishop of Rouen and Count of Évreux and Harleve of Rouen.

He had the following children with Godechildis (widow of Roger de Tosny):

* Guillaume (d. 1118, Count of Évreux)

* Agnes (married Simon I de Montfort)

* Godechilde, a nun at Evreux

That Godechildis was his wife and the mother of his children (rather than widow Adele de Tosny) is a correction made by the FMG Medieval Lands database. It is true that Richard d'Evreux married a widow of Roger de Tosny (Toeni), but according to these more recent sources, that widow was Godehildis and NOT Adela. So Richard was only married once, to Godehildis, who was the widow of Roger de Tosny. Roger de Tosny had been married to Adelaide of Barcelona and then Godechildis. But there is no record that Adelaide of Barcelona later married Richard d'Evreux--in fact, it was Godechildis who married him after her first husband's death.

"Ricardus Rotberti archiepiscopi filius" donated a mill at Evreux to the abbey of Jumièges by charter dated [26 Mar 1038/14 Apr 1039][1559]. "Ricardus comes Ebroicensis" donated the church of Gravigny to Sainte-Trinité de Rouen, dated [1052/66][1560]. He took part in the battle of Hastings 14 Oct 1066[1561].

m (after [1040]) as her second husband, GODECHILDIS, widow of ROGER [I] de Conches [Tosny], daughter of ---. Guillaume de Jumièges records the marriage of the widow of "Roger du Ternois" and "Richard comte d'Evreux et fils de Robert l'archevêque"[1562]. The Miracles of Sainte-Foy recount her being cured of a serious illness by miracle, when she was still married to her first husband[1563].

Comte Richard & his wife had three children:

a) GUILLAUME "Crespin" d'Evreux (-18 or 20 Apr 1118, bur Fontenelle, monastery of Saint-Wandrille[1564]). Guillaume de Jumièges names Guillaume as son of "Richard comte d'Evreux et fils de Robert l'archevêque" & his wife[1565]. The Brevis Relatio de Origine Willelmi Conquestoris records that "Willelmo comite Deurons" contributed 80 ships towards the invasion of England in 1066[1566]. Comte d'Evreux. He was taken prisoner during the siege of the castle of Sainte-Suzanne in 1085[1567]. Henry II King of England confirmed the property of the abbey of Saint-Martin de Troarn, including donations by "…Willelmi comitis Ebroicensis et Helewisie uxoris sue…", by charter dated to [1155/57][1569]. He was "struck down by apoplexy" and, after his death without children, King Henry "took the county of Evreux into his own hands" because the count's nephew Amaury de Montfort "had forfeited the king's favour by his effrontery"[1570]. The necrology of the monastery of Ouche records the death "18 Apr" of "Willelmus comes Ebroicensis"[1571]. The necrology of the church of Evreux records the death "20 Apr" of "Willelmus comes Ebroicensis"[1572]. m HELVISE de Nevers, daughter of GUILLAUME I Comte de Nevers & his first wife Ermengarde Ctss de Tonnerre (-[Feb 1113/18 Apr 1118], bur Noyon[1573]). She, her father and her husband are named by Orderic Vitalis, who says she was "clever and persuasive, but cruel and grasping", and recounts her anger towards "Isabel de Conches" which led to a bitter war with the latter's husband Raoul de Tosny[1574]. "Willelmi comitis Ebroicensis, Helvisse comitisse" donated property to the abbey of Saint-Martin, Troarn by charter dated to [1100/14][1575]. Henry II King of England confirmed the property of the abbey of Saint-Martin de Troarn, including donations by "…Willelmi comitis Ebroicensis et Helewisie uxoris sue…", by charter dated to [1155/57][1576].

b) AGNES d'Evreux . Orderic Vitalis says that Ralph de Tosny "carried…away by night" his uterine sister and gave her in marriage to Simon de Montfort, receiving in return Simon's daughter Isabel as his wife[1577]. In other passages Orderic names her and specifies that she was the daughter of Richard and sister of Guillaume[1578]. m as his third wife, SIMON Seigneur de Montfort-l'Amaury, son of AMAURY Seigneur de Montfort & his wife Bertrade --- (-25 Sep [1087], bur Epernon).

c) GODECHILDE d'Evreux . The primary source which confirms her parentage has not yet been identified. Nun at Evreux.

--------------------

Richard, Count of Evreux, was the grandson of Richard I, Duke of Normandy, and succeeded his father, Robert, Count of Evreux and Archbishop of Rouen, in 1037. Beyond the fact that at a date variously stated as 1055, 1060, and 1066 or 1067, he founded the abbey of St. Sauveur; nothing is stated of his acts and deeds worth recording; but he is described by the monk of Jumièges as equally a good Christian and a good soldier.

e was twice married. His first wife was Adela (called by Pere Anselm, Helene), widow of the Roger de Toeni who was slain in 1038, by whom he had William, who succeeded him, and Agnes, third wife of Simon de Montfort, and whose abduction by her half-brother, Ralph de Toeni, I have already mentioned. By his second wife, Godechilde, of whose family we know as little as we do of that of his first, he had only one daughter, named after her mother, who became abbess of St. Sauveur, the abbey founded by her father at Evreux.
