Notes about Hendrik Kiers Niemeijer

De familie Niemeijer behoorde tot de werkers in het veen. De veenarbeid deed deze familie niet in armoede leven, zoals hedendaagse wetenschappers wel eens voorhouden. Hoewel blijkt, dat er voor 1811 veel gebruik werd gemaakt van het patroniem of vadersnaam, werd toch al rond 1600 voor de familie een beroepsnaam gebruikt, In dit geval die van (op zijn drents) Nije Meijer, dus de nieuwe meier = huurder of pachter van een perceel bouwgrond of veen. Het is opvallend dat later de geslachtsnaam soms uiteen valt in Nijmeijer en Niemeijer, soms binnen hetzelfde gezin. Daarbij valt het op, dat in Drente vaak de naam Nijmeijer en in Groningen de naam Niemeijer wordt gebruikt. Met name is dit te verklaren uit het verschil in het dialect.
