    De Lingebode meldt op zaterdag 30 oktober 1920 onderstaand bericht:

    Beesd,
    Een ontzettend ongeval maakte woensdagmiddag een einde aan het leven van den landbouwer D. la Vergé op Mariënwaerd. Terwijl la Vergé en zijn knecht bezig waren met het aanbrengen van stroomatten om den bergkop, zijn beide op onverklaarbare wijze uit den torenhoogen korenberg gevallen; een deel van het koren, waarop zij zich bevonden, kwam mee naar beneden. Toen men de ongelukkigen ter hulp kwam, bleek dat la Vergé uit ooren en mond bloede en bewusteloos was; hij schijnt op het hoofd te zijn neergekomen. Het door dokter van den Heuvel ingestelde onderzoek bewees, dat hier geen hulp meer kon baten.
    En in de loop van den avond is het slachtoffer overleden. De knecht, Dirk van Zandwijk, is blijkbaar minder ongelukkig neergekomen. Ofschoon eerst bewusteloos, is hij al spoedig bijgekomen. Bij het geneeskundig onderzoek bleek, dat hij een rib had gebroken en ook nog andere kwetsuren in rug en borst had gekregen. Hoewel hij veel lijdt, is zijn toestand niet direct gevaarlijk.
    Als men de hoogte van den berg in aanmerking neemt, is het een wonder, dat ook de knecht niet verpletterd is op den keiharden grond.
