Hoepelmakerij

Het gebied van de Alblasserwaard is in de 10e een 11e eeuw in ontginning gebracht, waarbij het werd verdeeld in hoeven. Elke hoeve bestond uit een lang recht stuk grond dat van de dijk tot aan een achterdijk in de polder liep en omgeven was door sloten. Vooraan, nabij de ‘voordijk’, stond een kleine boerderij. Op het land daarachter teelde men diverse soorten graan, meestal tarwe.
In de loop van de eeuwen klonk de veenbodem en steeg het water buiten in de rivieren. Het gebied werd te drassig voor graanteelt en men ging over op veeteelt, wat op de bestaande gemengde boerenbedrijven al gebruikelijk was. De meest zuidelijke rand van het gebied had in de volgende eeuwen in toenemende mate te maken met kwelwater. Rivierwater dat op zwakke plekken onder de rivierdijk doorsijpelde. Het werd op den duur zelfs voor veeteelt ongeschikt.
In de wetenschap dat buitendijks het griendhout op de uiterwaarden ondanks dat het regelmatig in het water kwam te staan goed gedijde, ging men over tot de aanplant van binnengrienden. Dat gebeurde vooral in de 19e eeuw. Vanaf dat moment nam de bevolking wereldwijd toe en overal was vraag naar levensmiddelen. Veel levensmiddelen werden voor het vervoer verpakt in vaatjes. De duigen van dergelijke vaatjes werden bijeengehouden door wilgenhouten hoepels. Steeds meer bewoners van de zuidrand van de Alblasserwaard gingen rond 1900 het beroep van hoepelmaker uitoefenen, in de strek kortweg hoepmaker genoemd. Dat ging betrekkelijk eenvoudig in een schuurtje achter het huis. Het aantal hoepelmakers werd zo groot dat dit van negatieve invloed was op de prijs en de lonen bleven laag. Vlees aten de hoepelmakers zelden. Knollen, de naam voor knolraap in die tijd, werden dan ook ‘hoepmakersspek’ genoemd.
