Notes about Siemon Lieuwes Vellenga

Siemon Lieuwes Vellenga schreef zich met een "e" in in 1811 te Birdaard. Hij had toen 7 kinderend: Lieuwe (16), Hendrik (14), Jan (11), Sipke (9), Eelse (9), Antje (6) en Wietske (3). Bij zijn overlijden staat Siemon vermeldt als Vellinga. De Vellenga's daarna worden tot Klaas Vellenga in het Rijksar­chief op het Internet vermeld als Vellinga. Twee broers van Siemon, Jan en Reinder, staan ook bij de inschrijving reeds vermeldt met een ‘i’. Uit Birdaard.

Sommige menen dat de naam afkomstig is van vellebloten, het beroep waarbij wol van schapenhuiden geplukt wordt of dierenhuiden schoongemaakt en verhandeld worden. Er zijn echter geen aanwijzigen dat Siemon dit beroep daadwerkelijk uitoefende.
