Op 2 juni 1129 huwde Godfried, zoon van graaf Fulco V van Anjou (1109-1129), met Mathilde, dochter en enige erfgename van de Engelse koning Hendrik I (1100-1135). Toen deze op 1 dec. 1135 stierf, maakte Godfried aanspraak op Normandië, dat hij in 1144 in bezit wist te nemen. Zijn oudste zoon, Hendrik (1154-1189), is de stichter van het ´Angevijnse Rijk´, dat Engeland, Normandië, Aquitanië, Bretagne, Anjou en andere gewesten omvatte. Anjou zelf verloor in die constellatie alle onafhankelijkheid. De Franse koning Filips II Augustus veroverde het in 1205. Het werd toen kroongebied, doch in 1246 werd Anjou door Lodewijk IX in apanage afgestaan aan zijn broer Karel I van Anjou, stichter van het tweede Huis van Anjou.
