    Notes about Berengarius I van Friuli

    Berengarius I, was tevens keizer. Hij was een kleinzoon van Lodewijk de Vrome door zijn moeder Gisela, en zoon van Eberhard, markies van Friuli,en werd, na de afzetting van Karel de Dikke, in 888 tot koning van Italigekroond. Hij slaagde er aanvankelijk in zijn gezag tot in Midden-Italite laten gelden. De hertog van Spoleto, Guido, bestookte hem echter en wist zich te Pavia te doen kronen in 889 (door de paus tot keizer gekroondin 891). Na de dood van Guido (894) werd Berengarius´ positie wat verstevigd door de hulp van de koning van Duitsland, Arnulf van Karinthië. Wegens Berengarius´ onvermogen om de invallen van de Hongaren tegen te houden, riepen de groten van het rijk de hulp in van koning Lodewijk van Neder-Bourgondië, die in 900 in plaats van Berengarius koning van Italië werd (tot keizer gekroond in 901). Lodewijk moest zich echter snel terugtrekkenen Berengarius werd onbetwist heerser. In 915 verkreeg hij de keizerlijke waardigheid. Een derde mededinger op zijn weg, Rodulfus, koning van Opper-Bourgondi, versloeg hem in 923 bij Piacenza. Berengarius werd door een vazal vermoord.
