Ze gingen wonen in Oude Pekela, waar Jan onderwijzer was.
Hij was zijn loopbaan begonnen in Kommerzijl, gemeente Grijpskerk, en in Veendam.
Hij was eigenlijk liever naar de zeevaartschool in Veendam gegaan, maar zijn moeder wilde dat haar beide zonen naar de Normaalschool gingen. Omdat het water trok, solliciteerde hij in 1929 naar Maassluis en kreeg de benoeming. Al gauw kende hij iedere sleepboot met haar kapitein en ging menige keer mee de zee op.
In 1936 ontstond er een vacature voor Hoofd der school in het naburige Maasdijk en Jan solliciteerde.
Hij werd uit 143 kandidaten gekozen. Hij begon met de nieuwe cursus op 1 april 1937. Tot aan zijn plotselinge dood op 22 juni 1952 heeft hij deze functie gehad.
