Notes about Elisabeth Hermina Johanna "Betje" Holland

Elisabeth Holland ofwel Betje trouwt op 3 oktober 1928, op 26-jarige leeftijd, met de 15 jaar oudere Hendrik Helmes uit Doetinchem. Hendrik is kassenbouwer met veel werk in Groessen en begint een smederij aan de Ooijse Landweg in Ooij (Zevenaar). Zijn vader is begin 1928 gestorven. Zijn moeder Maria Johanna Jansen komt bij het paar inwonen. Bijna twee jaar later in september 1930 wordt het eerste kind, dochter Hermien, geboren. In de jaren daarna worden de dochters Riet (1932), Bettie (1937) en de zoons Jan (1934) en Albert (1935) geboren. In 1940 breekt de Tweede Wereldoorlog uit. Hendrik wordt ook als soldaat opgeroepen om tegen de Duitsers te strijden. Maar hij heeft al snel in de gaten dat het Nederlandse leger kansloos is tegen de grote invasie van de Duitsers. Hij verstopt zijn uniform en keert terug naar zijn familie. Na de capitulatie van Nederland krijgt het jonge gezin te maken de dreiging van de oorlog. De smederij in Ooij ligt niet ver van het spoor tussen Nederland en Duitsland. De bombardermenten op het spoor en het station in Zevenaar dwingen het gezin om in de herfst van 1944 te evacueren naar Doetinchem. Lopend en met een boerenweg vertrekken ze met 'bed en bult'. Daar vinden ze een onderkomen bij touwslager Louis Helmes, de oudste broer van Hendrik Helmes aan de dokter Hubernoodstraat in Doetinchem. Hendrik fietste dagelijks op en neer van Doetinchem naar Ooij. De Pasen van 1944 beleeft het gezin in de schuilkelder. Na de bevrijding in mei 1945 keren Betje en Hendrik weer terug naar Ooij. De smederij wordt weer opgestart. In oktober van dat jaar wordt dochter Judith geboren. Drie maanden later, in janauri 1946 slaat het noodlot toe als zoon Albert (Bep) op 10-jarige leeftijd, samen met zijn neef Albert Holland (zoon van ome Gerrit, de jongste broer van oma Helmes) gaat schaatsen achter de ondergelopen dijk in Ooij. Vader Hendrik gaat de jongens aan het einde van de middag opzoeken en zegt dat ze naar huis moeten komen. De jongens blijven nog even schaatsen en zoeken nog een andere plek op. Daar zakken ze door het ijs en verdrinken. Met het gezin is het hele dorp diep bedroefd, een drama in heel Ooij.

Getuige Wilhelmus Peeters was de buurman aan de Rosandeweg. Van af de hoek woonde daar de families Fontein, Holland en Peeters.
