    Von 1420 bis 1456 ging der Falkensteiner Besitz an die Grafen von Virneburg. Der Nachlaß war recht hoch verschuldet (25.498,- Gulden) und wurde deshalb an die Daun-Obersteiner verkauft. Wirich VI. von Daun verstarb am 1. Mai 1501 und wurde in der Abteikirche in Otterberg beigesetzt. Auf seinen Sohn Melchior geht der auf Burgruine Falkenstein heute noch eingemauerte Stein mit der Inschrift „wie du wilt Melchior“ zurück. Er verstarb 1517 und hinterließ drei Söhne namens Wirich VII., Philipp und Melchior.
