    Nach der Steuerliste des Jahres 1624 war Nikolaus Maas der reichste Bürger von Zell. Er besaß Häuser in Zell und St. Aldegund, Weinberge in Zell, Merl, Briedel und Cochem, Wiesen und Gärten zu Zell, Cochem und Aldegund. Er starb wohl Ende Juni 1644, da er am 14.7.1644 als abgelebt bezeichnet wird und sein Schwiegersohn Georg Adam Niesen (~1610- vor 1663) spätestens im August 1644 seine Nachfolge als kurtrierischer Keller und wohl auch Amtsverwalter von Zell angetreten hatte. Georg Adam Niesen hatte schon vor 1640 die um 1619 noch in Aldegund geborene Tochter Maria Maas geheiratet. Beide hatten neun Kinder, von denen ein Teil wiederum in der kurtrierischen Verwaltung Fuß faßte (vgl. Niesen). Die am 20.3.1626 in Zell geborene Tochter Anna Maria Margaretha Maas ehelichte um 1644 Dr. Johann Heinrich Goebel, den Stadtschultheiss von Trier, Hofrat und kaiserlichen Rat.

    Im Jahre 1639 stiftete Nikolaus Maas in der Kirche auf der Marienburg einen steinernen Nebenaltar, der folgende Inschrift trug:
    „DER EHRENVEST NICOLAVS MAES CHVR-
    TRIERISCHER KELNER VD SCHEFFEN ZV
    ZELL, DER ADLICH GOTSHEVSER SPRING-
    KIRSCHBACH VND STVBEN SECRETARIVS
    VND DOROTHEA KEISERIN EHELEVTH
    HABEN DER H. DREYFALTIG-EIT
    MARIAE MVTTER GOTTES, SS. SEBAS-
    TIANI ET ROCHI VND ANDE-EN HEILI-
    GEN ZV EHREN, DER KIRCHEN ZV
    ZIR VND ABVERSTORBENEN KINDEREN
    ZV TROST DIESEN ALTAR VFRICHTEN
    LASSEN ANNO 1639."
