    Reitse Jacobs Hansma en Martha Leenderts Stelwagen waren doopsgezind. Reitse Hansma was koopman en touwslager te Dokkum.

    Douwe Hansma's vader, Reitse Jacobs Hansma (1779-1855), trouwde in 1805 met Ybeltje Jans Hoekstra. Al in 1806 stierf Ybeltje in het kraambed. Haar zoontje Iebele bleef in leven. In 1809 trouwde Reitse voor de tweede keer, met Martha Leenderts Stelwagen (1789-1841). Reitse en Martha, die doopsgezind waren, kregen tien kinderen, waarvan drie jong stierven.
