    "Der Hofgerichtspräsident Edzard Tiarda von Starkenborg auf Middelstewehr, aus dem Groningischen stammend, hatte 1727 sein ostfriesisches Gut erheiratet." Hij was als Hofrichter lid van het provinciaal gerechtshof van Oost-Friesland. Door zijn eerste huwelijk werd hij Heer op Middelstewehr en lid van de ridderschap van Oost-Friesland. Op 23 januari 1728 heeft hij samen met zijn eerste vrouw Elisabeth van Diepenbroeck een wederzijds testament opgesteld. In 1768 was hij lid van de Staten-Generaal namens de Ommelanden.

    Via vererving kwam de havezathe Dunningen (bij De Wijk in Drenthe) in handen van Edzard Jacob Tjarda van Starkenborgh en zijn tweede vrouw Rutgera Christina Elisabeth van Dongen. Edzard Jacob liet rond 1780 een nieuw herenhuis bouwen en verzocht om verlegging van het recht van havezate naar het nieuw gebouwde huis. Na het overlijden van Tjarda van Starkenborch en zijn echtgenote Rutgera Christina Elizabeth van Dongen werd het huis rond 1793 verkocht aan de patriot en lid van de Loffelijken Etstoel der Landschap Drenthe, mr. Wijncko Tonckens. De nieuwe eigenaar liet de havezate afbreken.
