Na de dood van zijn vrouw Martha was hij erg eenzaam en leefde in een caravan in de tuin van zijn zoon Frits. Hij was bekend vin het hele dorp en bracht geregeld zijn tijd door in het lokale cafe

    Hij was timmerman maar stond niet bekend als een goede timmerman, vandaar dat er in Kessel weinig werk voor hem was. Ook het cafe liep niet zoals gehoopt en de schulden liepen dan ook erg hoog op. Hij kon nog net de reis naar Australie betalen maar er was dan ook helemaal niks meer over. Ze zijn niet uit weelde vertrokken.

Hij is daags voordat hij vertrok nog bij zijn broer Giel langs geweest om te zeggen dat hij binnenkort vertrok maar daags erna bleek hij al weg te zijn.
