     De herkomst van de familienaam


    De naam Van den Doel wijst op een Vlaamse herkomst. Immers, Doel ligt vlak bij Antwerpen in Vlaanderen. Tegenwoordig is Doel bekend om zijn kerncentrale, die de Belgen wijselijk vlak bij de grens hebben gebouwd. In geval van een ongeluk gaat een deel van de verontreiniging naar de buren. Het plaatsje Doel wordt in zijn bestaan bedreigd door de uitbreiding van de haven van Antwerpen. Het verzet ertegen is hevig, vooral van de oudere bewoners.


    Het is zeer onduidelijk vanwaar de naam Doel afkomstig is. Volgens sommigen zou Doel, opgeworpen dam betekenen. Andere verklaren dit woord als: geplaveide weg, landtong in een moeras. Doelen kunnen ook schuttersdoelen zijn; de naam 'De Doelen' van het Rotterdamse cultuurcentrum is daarvan afkomstig.     Op de oudste kaarten waar de eilanden of het eiland Doel afgebeeld staan, vinden we 'De Doelen' of 'De Doolen'. Van in de 17de eeuw wordt het 'Den Doel', en die zegswijze is gebleven tot op heden. Na het Frans bewind werd gewoon 'Doel' de ambtelijke schrijfwijze.


    Doel telde in 1677 594 inwoners. Dat was waarschijnlijk 15 jaar na het vertrek van de stamvaders. In 1993 telde het dorp 927 inwoners. Het inwonertal loopt gestaag terug. In 1876 bewoonden maar liefst 2511 mensen het dorp.


    Doel werd door indijking gewonnen uit het water van de Schelde. De eerste indijking vond plaats rond 1260. Door zijn slechte ligging en onberijdbare wegen in de winter en ook door de schelde en overstromingen tot in de 17de eeuw was Doel bijna uitsluitend aangewezen op de scheepvaart. Verscheidene dijkbreuken zetten de polders steeds terug onder water. Een tweede bedijking werd uitgevoerd in 1353.


    In 1621 was er een bedrijvige handel van Doel naar de Verenigde Provinciën door de inwonende schippers. Er waren meerdere afvaarten per maand naar o.a. Vlissingen, Middelburg, Leiden en Rotterdam, met lijnzaad, vlas en andere landbouwproducten


    De inpoldering in het huidige Deltagebied trokken in vroeger eeuwen mensen uit alle windstreken aan, ook uit Vlaanderen. We mogen ervan uitgaan dat tussen 1400 en 1700 zich regelmatig Vlamingen op Goeree en Overflakkee hebben gevestigd. Deze migratie werd versterkt door de vervolging van protestanten in de zuidelijke Nederlanden in de Tachtigjarige Oorlog en de val van Antwerpen in 1585.


    In Dirksland trouwde kort na 1600 een opvallend groot deel van de inwoners met partners die in Vlaanderen geboren waren (bijna 30%).
