    Mogelijk hebben de nazaten van Jan Geerts Snelter de familienaam van hun moeder gekozen omdat het beroep korvenmaker niet meer door hun werd uitgeoefend. Nazaten van de twee broers Jan en Harm zijn wel de familienaam Korvemaker blijven gebruiken.De familienaam Snelter is erg zeldzaam, want bij de volkstelling van 1947 leefden er in Nederland maar 22 personen met deze naam. 20 in de provincie Groningen en 2 in Brabant. En in 2007 zijn het er nog maar 11, en wel in de gemeenten Smallingerland, Menterwolde, Gaasterlan-Slaet, Zaanstad en Valkenswaard. In 2013 zijn er nog maar 2 mannelijke nazaten met de familienaam Snelter in leven. Het zijn Gerardus Justinus Snelter en zijn zoon Denny te Balk in Friesland. Van hen zal het voortbestaan van de familienaam Snelter afhangen.

    De familienaam Snelter zal mogelijk afkomstig zijn van de buurtschap Schnelten in de Duitse gemeente Lastrup (64 km ten zuid-oosten van Wedde).
