    De meekrap (Rubia tinctorum) is een bloemdragende plant,diebehoort tot de sterbladigenfamilie (Rubiaceae). Meekrapwerdvroeger gebruikt als grondstof voor de rodekleurstofalizarine. Daarnaast wordt aan meekrap ook eenmedicinalewerking toegeschreven.

    De meekrapplant wordt 60 tot 90 cm hoog. Hij heeftkleine,gele bloemen. In de grond bevinden zichwortelstokken, die50 tot 100 cm in de grond steken.

    Meekrap is als landbouwproduct vooral geteeld voor derodekleurstof alizarine, die werd gebruikt voor het kleurenvantextiel en leer. Ook werd meekrap gebruikt indeminiatuurschilderkunst, als pigment om olieverf oflijmverfte kleuren. Daarnaast wordt al sinds de oudheideenmedicinale werking aan deze plant toegeschreven.
