    De Novemberrevolutie is een reeks gebeurtenisseninDuitsland in 1918 en 1919 met als hoogtepunt hetafzettenvan de Duitse keizer Wilhelm II en de vorming vaneendemocratische republiek. Evenals in deRussischefebruarirevolutie was er niet één partij die deopstandleidde, en arbeidersraden vergelijkbaar met desovjetsgrepen de macht over het hele land. Maar degebeurtenissenblijven politiek links polariseren, vooralomdat desociaaldemocratische regering het paramilitaireFreikorpsgebruikte om de extreem-linkse Spartacus-opstandteonderdrukken.

    Evenals de Russische revolutie vond deNovemberrevolutieplaats in de context van de rampzaligegevolgen van deEerste Wereldoorlog. De capitulatie door hetopperbevelonder Erich Ludendorff veroorzaakte een politiekecrisisdie leidde tot de machtsovername door de liberaleprinsMaximiliaan van Baden. Hoewel debelangrijkstemassa-arbeiderspartij, de SozialdemokratischeParteiDeutschlands (SPD), in de regering zat, bleekditonvoldoende om de opstand te voorkomen.

    Het oproer begon in Kiel op 4 november 1918,toenveertigduizend zeelui en mariniers de haven overnamenuitprotest tegen plannen van de Duitse marineleiding vooreengevecht tegen de Royal Navy, ondanks het feit dat deoorlogduidelijk verloren was. Op 8 november haddenarbeiders- ensoldatenraden de macht gegrepen in hetgrootste deel vanWest-Duitsland, daarmee de basis leggendvoor de zogenaamderadenrepubliek. De keizer werd op 9november gedwongen afte treden, waarmee een einde kwam aande Duitse monarchie.De SPD kwamen aan de macht in de nieuwerepubliek, samenmet de radicalere UnabhängigeSozialdemokratische ParteiDeutschlands (USPD).

    Maar het verenigde front viel eind december 1918 uiteentoende USPD de coalitie verliet uit protest tegen devermeendecompromissen van de SPD met de (kapitalistische)status quo.Bovendien werd Duitsland in januari 1919overspoeld door eentweede revolutionaire golf, aangevoerddoor decommunistische Spartacusbond. In reactie daaropgebruikte desociaaldemocratische leider Friedrich Eberthet Freikorps,een nationalistische militie, om het oproerte onderdrukken.De twee beroemdste slachtoffers vandezecontrarevolutionaire operatie waren deSpartacistischeleiders Karl Liebknecht en Rosa Luxemburg,die werdenvermoord op 15 januari 1919. Tegen mei 1919wasrevolutionair links verslagen.

    De Novemberrevolutie legde de grondslagen voordeWeimarrepubliek, een parlementaire democratie diegeplaagdwerd door instabiliteit en polarisatie, en diegetroffenwerd door een reeks sociale crises, eindigend methaarvernietiging in 1933 door de nazi's onder Adolf Hitler.
