    Deze reservestrijdkrachten moesten vaak om de zoveel jaaropherhalingsoefening. Het doel van een landweer naastdereguliere krijgsmacht is om indien nodig in korte tijdeengroot aantal soldaten te kunnen mobiliseren.

    In Nederland werd op 24 juni 1901 deLandweer-wetaangenomen. Hierbij werden de schutterijenofficieelopgeheven en vervangen door een landweer, diebestond uitdienstplichtigen en vrijwilligers. De landweerwerd net alsde in 1913 heropgerichte Landstorm in 1922opgeheven, toeneen geheel nieuwe regeling van kracht werd.
