    Na het behalen van het mulo-diploma bezocht degereformeerdeBiesheuvel het Christelijk Lyceum te Haarlem.Hij behaaldeer het diploma gymnasium-A, waarna hij rechtenging studerenaan de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. Hijslaagde voor hetdoctoraal examen rechtsgeleerdheid inseptember 1945. Van1945 tot 1947 was hij secretaris van deProvincialeVoedselcommissaris van Noord-Holland teAlkmaar. In 1947werd hij secretaris van de afdelingbuitenland van deStichting voor de Landbouw, de voorlopervan hetLandbouwschap. Biesheuvel werd in 1952 algemeensecretarisvan de Nederlandse Christelijke Boeren enTuindersbond(CBTB) en in 1959 voorzitter. Vanaf 1959 washij ook lid vanhet bestuur van het Landbouwschap, van deStichting van deArbeid, van de Centrale Raiffeisenbank envan de Heidemij.

    Van 1956 tot 1963 was hij voor de Anti-RevolutionairePartij(ARP) lid van de Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal.Van 1957tot 1961 was hij lid van de RaadgevendeVergadering van deRaad van Europa en van 1961 tot 1963 lidvan het EuropeesParlement. In de Kabinetten van VictorMarijnen, Cals enZijlstra was hij van 24 juli 1963 tot 5april 1967viceminister-president, belast met debehartiging vanKoninkrijksaangelegenheden, en minister vanLandbouw enVisserij.

    Vanaf 1967 was hij opnieuw lid van de Tweede KamerderStaten-Generaal en voorzitter van de ARP-fractie. Hijwasin deze periode ook voorzitter van het College vandeScheepsbouw en voorzitter van de commissieHeroriëntatieoverheidsvoorlichting.

    Van 6 juli 1971 tot 11 mei 1973 wasBiesheuvelminister-president en minister van Algemene Zakenvan tweekabinetten die zijn naam droegen. Hetkabinet-Biesheuvel Istruikelde in juli 1972 over debegroting 1973. Na hetvertrek van de DS'70-ministers uithet kabinet, die eenzuiniger beleid wilden, maakteBiesheuvel een doorstart meteen minderheidskabinet datBiesheuvel II genoemd werd; erwerden vervroegdeverkiezingen uitgeschreven voor 1973.Biesheuvel II hieldhet tot die verkiezingen vol.

    Biesheuvel heeft na zijn politieke loopbaan nogvelefuncties bij de overheid en het bedrijfsleven vervuld.Zowas hij onder andere voorzitter van de RaadvanCommissarissen van de Nationale Investeringsbank, lidvande Raad van Commissarissen van OGEM en de KLM,voorzittervan de Koninkrijkswerkgroep voor de NederlandseAntillen,voorzitter van de Staatscommissie van adviesinzake derelatie kiezers-beleidsvorming, voorzitter vandeVoorlopige Raad voor Verkeer en Waterstaat envoorzittervan de Interdepartementale CoördinatiecommissievoorNoordzeeaangelegenheden ICONA.

    Barend Biesheuvel overleed op 81-jarige leeftijd enwerdbegraven op de Algemene Begraafplaats aan de BergweginBloemendaal.
