Fabrieksarbeider en broeder.
Als broeder geprofest 25 december 1895 en trad in 1896 toe tot de missionarissen van het Heilig Hart (MSC). Als missiebroeder werkte hij in in de missie van het toemalige Nederlands Zuid Nieuw-Guinea.

In zijn jeugd werd hij opgeleid tot timmerman. Op 16 april 1896 trad Johannes Hamers op 23-jarige leeftijd in bij het Missiehuis te Tilburg van de Missionarissen van het Heilig Hart (MSC). Op 13 oktober 1900 vertrok hij naar de missie in het Apostolisch Vicariaat van Nieuw Pommeren, het huidig Nieuw-Brittanië. Dit eiland voor de noord-oostelijke kust van Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea, was een Duitse kolonie van 1884 tot 1914 en was in n 1890 door de propaganda fide in Rome toevertrouwd aan de Missionarissen van het Heilig Hart. De missionarissen van het Heilig Hart stichtten in 1905 een nieuwe missiepost in Merauke, in het toemalige Nederlands Zuid Nieuw-Guinea. De Nederlandse missionarissen in Nieuw Pommeren werd de keuze voorgelegd of zij daar wilden blijven of naar de nieuwe missie in Merauke wilden. Broeder Hamers koos voor het laatste en vertrok in 1906. Tot 1908 werkte hij in Merauke waarna hij voor één jaar naar Langgoer op de Kei-eilanden vertrok. Niet lang daarna ging broeder Hamerssamen met pater Jos van de Kolk in 1910 naar Okaba, om een missiestatie op te richten. In 1911 keerde hij terug naar Nederland. In de nacht van 7 op 8 oktober 1913 overleed hij op 41-jarige leeftijd in het Missiehuis te Arnhem.
