    Jos van Sjefke Hamers overleed op 16-jarige leeftijd op 17 januari 1939 bij een noodlottig ongeval op de Rijksweg ter hoogte van het kruisbeeld bij Assisië. Het nieuws haalde de krant. Er werden meerdere pagina’s en foto’s aan gewijd. Hij fietste naar huis na een klus als boodschappenjongen voor kruidenier Danklof – de Jong en er was nagenoeg geen verkeer op de Rijksweg. Net van die ene auto die voorbij kwam verloor de chauffeur de macht over het stuur en schepte Hamers. Beide betrokkenen waren op slag dood. Wrang aan dit toch al tragische verhaal is dat vader Sjef en broer Gerrit er langs fietsten toen het ongeluk zich juist had voltrokken. Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: “Die brengt het er nie levend af”. Een tijdje later stond de politie aan de deur.
