Notes about Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria "Wilhelmina" van ORANJE NASSAU

Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria van Oranje Nassau, geboren te 's-Gravenhage op 31 augustus 1880, is het enige kind uit het tweede huwelijk van Koning Willem III met Emma van Waldeck-Pyrmont (1858-1934). Ze wordt in streng isolement opgevoed. Het hof heeft zij in haar memoires gekarakteriseerd als 'de kooi'.
Door het overlijden van haar halfbroer Alexander d.d. 21 juni 1884, wordt ze troonopvolgster. Bij de dood van haar vader, op 23 november 1890, wordt ze koningin. Aangezien ze dan nog minderjarig is, wordt haar moeder, Koningin Emma, aangewezen als regentes. Wilhelmina wordt gekroond op 6 september 1898 in de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam. Op 7 februari 1901 trouwde Wilhelmina met hertog Hendrik van Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Dit gebeurde na nogal wat diplomatieke onderhandelingen. Uit dit huwelijk wordt op 30 april 1909 hun enige kind, prinses Juliana, geboren. Prins Hendrik heeft echter vooral belangstelling voor de jacht en voor vrouwen en verwekt een buitenechtelijk kind.
Wilhelmina gelooft in een hecht verbond tussen God, Vaderland en Oranje. Willem van Oranje en koning Willem I zijn haar grote voorbeelden. Tijdens de eerste Wereldoorlog steunt koningin Wilhelmina fanatiek de Nederlandse neutraliteit. In de jaren '20, als het kabinet sterk bezuinigt op defensie, denkt ze meermalen aan aftreden. Haar precieze invloed op de politiek is moeilijk vast te stellen. Het staat wel vast dat zij in de politiek verre van meegaand is. Vaak kiest zij duidelijk partij, ook in politiek gevoelige zaken.
Vanaf de opkomst van Adolf Hitler in Duitsland leeft Wilhelmina in de overtuiging dat een nieuwe Wereldoorlog onvermijdelijk is en dat Nederland er deze keer niet buiten zal kunnen blijven. Als de Duitsers in 1940 Nederland binnenvallen vlucht ze naar Engeland waar ze een regering in ballingschap opricht. In Londen wordt Wilhelmina hét symbool voor het Nederlandse verzet.
Gedurende haar ballingschap in Londen krijgt het koningschap voor Wilhelmina meer inhoud, in de vorm van meer politieke macht. Gaandeweg vestigt Wilhelmina haar hoop op een nieuw staatsbestel na de oorlog, zonder de oude politieke partijen en met een sterk uitvoerend gezag waarin een vooraanstaande rol zou zijn weggelegd voor de kroon en de leiders van het verzet.
Als ze na de oorlog, in 1945, terugkeert naar Nederland worden de oude verhoudingen echter grotendeels hersteld. Voor Wilhelmina betekent dit een enorme teleurstelling. Op 4 september 1948 doet Wilhelmina in het Paleis op de Dam troonsafstand. Ze wordt opgevolgd door haar enige kind, koningin Juliana. De jaren daarna brengt zij door op paleis Het Loo. Wilhelmina sterft op 28 november 1962. Volgens haar eigen wens wordt ze in een witte koets naar de koninklijke grafkelder in de Nieuwe Kerk te Delft gebracht.
