    Het dorp Pekela ontstond rond 1600 op initiatief van de Pekelder Compagnie als veenkolonie langs de Pekel A, die planmatig werd opgezet in een verveningsgebied op instructies vanuit de stad Groningen met wijken en zwetsloten die tot op de meter nauwkeurig werden aangegeven. Pekela werd opgezet vanuit een 'enkelvoudig kanalenstelsel'; langs een kanaal (Pekel A - deels gekanaliseerd tot het Pekelderdiep) werden loodrecht een aantal wijken (zijkanalen) en zwetsloten (wateren tussen de percelen van verschillende eigenaren) gegraven. Het drukke dorpsleven vond plaats langs het kanaal, waar de rijkeren woonden. Hier werden schuiten met stadsdrek aangevoerd en overgeladen door arbeiders om vervolgens te worden vermengd met de bonkaarde (toplaag) van het veen om het vruchtbaarder te maken. Reeds gestoken turf werd er overgeladen op schuiten naar de stad. Achter het 'drukke deel' lagen met name boerderijen.
