      Convooien: (ook: Convooien en Licenten) Ten tijde van de Republiek in- en uitvoerrechten, geheven in de zee- en rivierhavens ter bekostiging van de oorlogsvloot. Convooien waren oorspronkelijk, in de jaren 1570, vrijbrieven aan koopvaarders, door Willem van Oranje verleend, als bescherming tegen overvallen door de Watergeuzen. In 1572 werden de convooien een gewestelijke Hollandse belasting. Licenten waren oorspronkelijk Zeeuwse vergunningen tot het drijven van handel met de Spaanse vijand die bij opbod verkocht werden, bekend vanaf 12 juni 1573. Binnen korte tijd ontwikkelden de convooien en licenten zich tot belastingen t.b.v. de oorlogsvloot, en werden ze door de Generaliteit overgenomen. Zie ook 'Inlandtsche Convooyen'.
