Aardappelziekte, malaria en cholera

Welke oorzaken zijn er aan te wijzen voor het ontstaan van de ketenkolonies juist in deze periode 1840 tot 1850? De aardappel was volksvoedsel geworden en dat had alles te maken met de sterke bevolkingsgroei van 1815 tot 1850. De periode van 1813 – 1850 werd tevens gekenmerkt door een langdurige economische depressie. De bevolking was gegroeid dankzij de aardappel maar het aardappelaanbod liet het vooral van 1844 tot 1848 afweten door lange strenge winters en de aardappelziekte (phytophthora infestans) waardoor gehele oogsten mislukten. Ziekten als malaria (1846 en 1847) en cholera (1848 / 1849) eisten overal in den lande slachtoffers
