Hendrik Joannes Casper Holdert (Opa Holdert) was a strict man. During our holiday in The Netherlands in about 1920 we went to Nijmegen. In the morning we had to eat oatmeel poridge with rye bread and bacon. This was something that we had never eaten as we lived in the Dutch East Indies, but Opa would insist despite our protestations as he felt it was necessary during winter.
I remember going for a walk in the snow with Opa and slipping on some ice and cutting my knee.
My sister Jes used to sleep with her knees tucked up under her. Opa didn't think this was right and would pull her legs straght only to find that she would pull them up again.
When we came to live in The Netherlands in 1925, Opa was very sick. Loes and I had a short visit with him. He had kidney problems. Opa and Oma lived at Harmoniehof in Amsterdam at that time.
