Volgens Aaltje Smit , zuster van Klaasje van der Zwaag-Smit, zetten ze hem op de kop in de sloot, waardoor hij verdronk. Hij zou een grote misdaad hebben opgelost en om die kennis zijn vermoord. Uit het krantenartikel blijkt dat het waarschijnlijk om een ongeluk ging.

Verdronken in de Leeuwenvaart nabij de Smidsbrug in 's Gravenland/ Kortenhoef
