Als kind wilde Jan al boer worden en ging hij naar de Landbouwschool.
Hij was veel op de boerderij bij zijn ome Cor Kaandorp aan de Purmerenderweg 16 in de Beemster, zijn bijnaam daar was : "Broos", vanwege zijn korte haar. Hij werkte ook bij Arie Schoorl en bracht veevoer rond. Samen met Annemiek woonde hij in Beek, Limburg. Hier had hij oa als hobby : varkens. Samen emigreerden zij en werd hij boer in Two Hills, Alberta, Canada. Zijn koeienbrandmerk daar was B3. Het gezin kwam in 1984 terug naar Nederland en werd hij Rijksdeurwaarder.
