Jan is op 21-12-1906 tot de dienst van de Nationale Militie 'aangewezen'. Hij was toen volgens het inschrijvingsregister arbeider en 1 meter en 699 millimeter lang. Niet bekend of hij wel of niet daadwerkelijk in dienst geweest is, staat niet verder vermeld.
Op 23-04-1920 vanuit Blija verhuisd naar Bergentheim, het werk op de Friese klei was (te) zwaar en in Bergentheim was een boerderijtje te koop. Broer Sijtze, die in het niet zover van Bergentheim gelegen Lutten onderwijzer was, had hiervoor bemiddeld. Ze woonden eerst op nr. C 66. (bevolkingsregister Hardenberg 1910-1920 bl. 305) Dat was "op de Haar", nu de Haarweg geheten.
In 1923 zijn ze verhuisd naar C140 (huisje "Van der Poll", nu Slotweg 8) en nog weer later naar een huisje aan het kanaal, huisnr. C121, later C152. (zie foto). In die tijd was J. Malda koster van de Gereformeerde kerk, twee huizen verderop en aanzegger/doodgraver bij de plaatselijke lijkwagenvereniging. Bij een begrafenis liep hij voor de lijkwagen uit, gekleed in een zwarte mantel en een dito steek op het hoofd. Een bekende verschijning in Bergentheim.
De woning aan het kanaal is in 1964 afgebroken en heeft plaats gemaakt voor nieuwbouw.
