Hij was eerst kapitein en ritmeester en werd op 5-2-1697 na het overlijden van zijn vader grietman van Ferwerderadeel.
Hij legde het ambt in 1701 neer,ging weer in het leger en bracht het in 1712 tot generaal-majoor.
Hij was niet getrouwd.

Op Grovestins zou ook de Generaal Frederik van Sirtema toe Grovestins (1668 - 1730) gewoond hebben, die met een leger van 1500 ruiters in 1712 een succesvolle tocht tegen de Franse Zonnekoning (Lodewijk XIV) uitvoerde. Hij trok o.a. door het bisdom Metz, waar hij 35 dorpen en 18 kastelen plunderde en uitbrandde. Mogelijk was hij slechts één van de bezitters, want het Floreenkohier van 1700 vermeldt als eigenaren "de erven van de ed. hr. Grovestins, in leven eerste en presiderende raad in den Hove van Friesland" en als gebruiker "de ed. hr. holtphester Burmania, bruiker van ’t hoornleger (het huis dus), de landen aan stucken verhuirt".
