In 1847 werd Jelle Doedes gekeurd bij de Nationale Militie (militaire dienst). Iets wat hij nog vaak zou doen, zoals de akte aantoont.
Daarin lezen we dat hij uit hoofde van gebrek aan lengte in 1847, 1848, 1849 en 1850 telkens voor 1 jaar, en in 1851 om dezelfde reden voor altijd uit dienst is vrijgesteld.
Dat betekende dus dat hij nog geen 1.55 meter lang was, de minimale lengte om in dienst te kunnen gaan.
