Hij werd in Augustus 1810 met zijn tweelingbroer Leonardus reeds bekwaam geacht de school te verlaten en de academie te Groningen te bezoeken, waar een oudere broer Eco reeds studeerde.
Na zijn keuze tot het vak der geneeskunde bepaald te hebben, ging hij over naar de Leidsche Hogeschool, waar o.a. zijn leerneester was zijn oom Prof. Adolphus Ypeij, die als hoogleeraar te Franeker in 1795 afgezet en in 1805 daar hersteld en in 1812 naar Leiden was overgepLaatst.
Nicolaas droeg aan hem en aan zijn oom Leonardus de Wendt alsmede aan een Leeuwarder geneesheer Dr. Julius Uitringa Coulon zijn academisch proefschrift : "over de werking der koude op het menselijk ligchaam en vooral van koud water in typheuse ziekten" (Dissertatio medica inauguralis, de actione frigoris in corpus hnmantrm potissimum aquae frigidae in morbis typhoideis) op.
Zo werd hij op 11-7-1815 tot Doctor in de geneeskunde bevorderd.
Van 1844 tot 1845 was hij lid van de edelijke Raad van Leeuwarden.
Na zijn huwelijk net Boudina Looxma, op 28-5-1828 te Leeuwarden bewoonde hij, na het overlijden van zijn schoonvader Mr. Age Looxma, met, haar en zijn enige zoon het buitenverblijf 'Vijversburg" onder Rijperkerk bij Leeuwarden. Hij kocht o.a. het daarnaast gelegen Toutenburg aan.
Na een bezoek in April 1852 door Z.M. Koning Willem III werd hij tot Ridder der orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw benoemd.
In 1868 bevorderde hij het plan tot stichting van een gedenkteken.
