Froukje Jellema en Harmen Freerks trouwden in 1806. Misschien was ze al zwanger. Hoe dan ook, in 1807 werd hun dochter Riemke geboren. Later dat jaar bereikte Froukje de droeve tijding dat haar man Harmen in Londen overboord was geslagen en in de Theems verdronken. Heeft hij zijn dochter nog gezien of zat hij al in Engeland? De tijden waren zwaar, de handel van Nederland met de rest van de wereld was zo goed als tot stilstand gekomen. Het Koninkrijk Holland, sinds 1806 een vazalstaat van Frankrijk onder koning Lodewijk Napoleon, was in voortdurende oorlog met Engeland. Ook de palinghandel verging het slecht. Heeg was in crisis.
