De jurist, diplomaat en politicus dr. Hessel Aysma (ca. 1528-1592) was lid van Gedeputeerde Staten van Friesland (1559-1560), syndicus van Groningen (1560-1567) en vluchtte in 1567 naar Emden, waar hij in dienst van het Oostfriese gravenhuis stond. Terug in Friesland was hij lid van de Staten-Generaal (1577-1580) en president van het Hof van Friesland (1578/1580-1587). Hij nam deel aan de delegaties die in 1584 en 1585 de soevereiniteit over de Nederlanden aanboden aan Hendrik III van Frankrijk en Elizabeth I van Engeland.

In de jaren 1580 was Aysma een bijzonder invloed­rijk politicus en als hoofd van de Hoffactie een trouw aanhanger van de graaf Leicester (1586-1587). Hij kwam zo in botsing met stadhouder Willem Lodewijk van Nassau en met Statenfactie onder leiding van Karel Roorda. Na de afgang van Leicester in 1587 werd Aysma in zijn huis gevangen genomen en als president afgezet. Zijn zoon Taco zorgde in 1618 voor eerherstel. Het doel van deze biografie is om meer inzicht te krijgen in het proces van staatsvorming in Friesland ten tijde van de Nederlandse Opstand.
