De relatie met de familie lag moeilijk door een aantal factoren: haar nogal 'wilde' levensstijl, de illegale bezigheden van haar man Jef (smokkelaar). Vava Denis had het moeilijk met het feit dat ze iemand huwde die 'veel' (ongeveer 5 jaar) ouder was.
