    In de overtuiging dat de islamitische heerser van Tunis zich tot het christendom zou bekeren bij de aanblik van een leger kruisvaarders dat aan land ging, lanceerde Lodewijk IX de Achtste Kruistocht, die hem echter fataal zou worden. Een maand na zijn landing overleed hij op 56-jarige leeftijd vóór de wallen van Tunis aan de pest (tyfus is ook mogelijk). Na zijn dood werd hij overgebracht naar Lyon en bijgezet in de kathedraal aldaar.

    In 1297 werd hij door paus Bonifatius VIII heilig verklaard

Nadat zijn vader op 12 november 1226 overleden was, werd hij reeds op 29 november, op 12-jarige leeftijd, tot koning gekroond in de kathedraal van Reims, die op dat ogenblik nog in de steigers stond. Hij stond aanvankelijk onder voogdijschap van zijn moeder, die erg beducht was voor een opstand van de feodale heren.
