Sjef wordt geboren op 13 mei 1904 in Reusel. Als in de loop van 1939-1940 de oorlogsdreiging in Nederland sterk toeneemt, wordt hij onder de wapenen geroepen bij de Koninklijke Landmacht. Als soldaat van de motorcompagnie van II-26 Regiment Infanterie wordt Sjef begin mei 1940 gelegerd aan de Maaslinie, in het vak Sint Agatha.

Op 10 mei 1940 valt het Duitse leger Nederland binnen en komt het bij Mook direct tot hevige gevechten. Omdat de Nederlandse troepen de spoorbrug daar hebben opgeblazen, wordt Sjefs vak zwaar onder vuur genomen. Tijdens bevoorrading raakt Sjef bij een artilleriebeschieting lichtgewond en wordt behandeld in kazemat S-91. De Duitsers breken door en Sjef wordt met de andere aanwezige Nederlandse militairen krijgsgevangen genomen. Gezamenlijk worden ze op transport gezet naar het krijgsgevangenenkamp Neubrandenburg ten noorden van Berlijn. Als gevolg van de ongezonde omstandigheden in het kamp loopt Sjef tuberculose op.

Na de capitulatie van Nederland op 15 mei 1940 worden de Nederlandse krijgsgevangenen weer vrijgelaten en naar Nederland teruggevoerd. Sjef kan terugkeren naar huis in Reusel, maar in de daaropvolgende maanden verslechtert zijn gezondheid snel. Op 14 juli 1940 overlijdt hij aan de tuberculose die hij tijdens krijgsgevangenschap had opgelopen. Sjef is 36 jaar geworden. Tot de ruiming van zijn graf heeft hij zijn rustplaats thuis in Reusel gehad.
