Oorlogsslachtoffer
Jan Balduk wordt op 11 april 1909 geboren in het Gelderse Didam. Rond 1935 komt hij vanwege de crisis naar Noord-Brabant om daar werk te vinden als boerenknecht in Duizel. Hier leert hij Jo Bakkers kennen met wie hij trouwt en in Hoogeloon gaat wonen.
In 1939 worden alle voormalige soldaten als reservisten gemobiliseerd; ook Jan wordt opgeroepen en gaat bij de infanterie te Vreeswijk.
Als op 10 mei 1940 de oorlog uitbreekt, verhuist zijn compagnie naar de Lek in de Hollandse Waterlinie. Op de plaats waar Jan is geplaatst, blijven de oorlogshandelingen beperkt. Vier dagen later besluit de Nederlandse regering te capituleren. Zodra dit bericht de Nederlandse soldaten bereikt, gaat één van hen volledig door het lint en verschanst zich op de Diefdijk van waar hij schiet op alles wat beweegt.
De sergeanten Migchelbrink en Louis van der Hoeven besluiten hem te overmeesteren en tot bedaren te brengen, maar terwijl ze langs de dijk sluipen, wordt Louis dodelijk getroffen door de soldaat. Migchelbrink keert terug en vraagt om een vrijwilliger om een tweede poging te ondernemen. Jan meldt zich met de woorden: “De man die Louis heeft neergeschoten, neem ik voor mijn rekening.” Langs de dijk sluipen ze in de richting van de geweerschoten, maar dan wordt Jan plots doorzeefd met kogels in zijn hoofd en borst. Hij overlijdt ter plekke op 31-jarige leeftijd, slachtoffer van een Nederlandse soldaat.

In Hoogeloon in het Mariakapelletje op Tonnijken is als herinnering aan hem een raam aangebracht in de zijgevel. De andere zijgevel memoreert aan Jan Goossens gesneuveld in Blerick.
