"Arie was born on January 29, 1884, in Aalst, Netherlands, son of Delius and Andriana Hobo Haasakker. As the ninth of thirteen children with only Arie, his brother Cornelious, sisters Geertruij and Batje were the only survivors past infancy. In 1904 Arie, Cornelious and father Delius, came to America arriving in New York. They moved on to Iowa to stay with relatives for three years and then to Minnesota for two years. At that time they moved to South Dakota where they worked on a dryland ranch. After leaving there they came to Manhattan and to Willow Creek, Montana in 1915.
Arie met Rosa Bell Parker while working on her father's ( Fred Parker) ranch digging potatoes. They were married September 10, 1919 in Helena. Together they worked there 400 acre dryland ranch three miles south of Willow Creek. They had eight children; John Hampton, Wesley Burton, Daniel Corneilius, Roy Edward, Bennie William, Mary Louise, Rose May and Robert Junior.
Everyone in the Willow Creek area knew Arie as "Shorty" due of his height being under 5' and for his outstanding strength. He could out shovel tiring out any man who tried to keep up with him shoveling grain. Arie worked the land growing grain and hay. They raised milking cows, chickens and pigs. They sold Butter that Rosa made , cream and eggs to people in the area . Arie's father Delius lived in a small home down the road from the farm and Cornelious his brother came to Montana for a short time in 1920 before heading west to California. In 1923 his father, Delius returned to Holland and died shortly afterwards in 1926 in Aalst, Netherlands." Find a Grave
