Hij vertrekt op 7 oktober 1929 naar Eindhoven om daar als portier te gaan werken.

Dan kwam het huis van Jan Martens. Het echtpaar met twee kinderen woonde beneden en boven woonde 'het Kleermakerke'...(Goverde) en zijn vrouw Betje, ze waren de ouders van hun zoon die er langs woonden. Hij heette ook wel d'n Ouwe Goverde om hem van de zoon te kunnen onderscheiden. Ik kan me nog nu niet voorstellen hoe dat kleine frele Betje... in staat was om ooit kinderen te krijgen zo fragiel en teer was ze. Het 'Kleermakerke' zorgde perfect voor haar als ze al lang ziek was, ik denk dat zij nogal wat jaren ouder was dan hij. Hij redderde dat het ene lieve deugd was en dat alles op de bovenverdieping. Hij had weliswaar een platdak, maar de ruimte was toch verdraaid klein waar ze woonden. Ik heb als jong kind, ik was 10?, nog meegemaakt dat Betje boven stierf. Ik mocht aan haar doodsbed komen. Ze lag daar in haar bed als een witte engel, een soort moeder Theresa. Ik geloof dat haar man niet veel later ook is gestorven.
