Venu s'installer à Malmédy, il fut d'abord désigné comme Jhan le Liégeois et Johan de Liège, d'où il était originaire. Peu après son mariage, il s'installa à Hédomont et les habitants de l'endroit le désigèrent comme Jean de Liège ou encore Jean de Mâmdî. A son décès, dans le registre paroissial: Jean de Malmendy aussi dit de Liège et, dans le mème registre, lors de son décès, sa veuve fut désignée comme Catherine Marquet veuve de Jean de Liège dit Mamdy. Sa descendance fut désignée, durant les dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles fut désignée sous diverses graphies: de Mamdy, de Mamedi, Demandy, Demamdy, de Malmendie, Jean de Mamdi, Jan de Mamdi.Ainsi, j'ai mème rencontré Jan Jan de Mâmdî ou Catherine Jean de Mâmdî. On rencontre cette forme de Mâmdî à Etalle-il existe un Malmedy en Lorraine-. Bel exemple de formation, de ce qui, plus tard, sera désigné comme un patronyme.
