    In Virginia / West Virginia, werd in 1853 begonnen met het administrerenvan sterfgevallen door het bestuur van de county. In 1917 begon het West Virginia Department van Health Vital Registration kantoor met het verzamelen van county overlijdensaktes en begon met het uitgeven van staats overlijdensaktes vanaf dat jaar tot hedendaags. Overlijdensaktes in West Virginia worden pas openbaar na 50 jaar vanaf de datum van uitgifte maar alle aanwezige staats overlijdensaktes voor personen van alle 55 staten van 1917 tot en met 1964 zijn beschikbaar. Nieuwe records in de collectie vanaf 1964 zullen worden toegevoegd wanneer ze beschikbaar komen.
