De familie A Campo ontleent haar naam aan het gehucht Te Velde, gelegen aan het riviertje de Berwinne in de bank Aubel, grenzend aan Clermont. De stamvader van de familie is Merten (Martinus) van de Velde die leefde in de eerste helft van de 16e eeuw. Veel van zijn afstammelingen gingen schuil onder het patroniem Mertens. Opmerkelijk is dat de voornaam Martinus tot in de 20e eeuw voorkomt binnen takken van deze familie. Deze naamgeving stoelt derhalve op een minimaal vier eeuwen gehandhaafde traditie. De naam Van de Velde of Te Velde werd door de geestelijken vertaald in A Campo. Omdat zij de naam A Campo tijdens hun leven aannamen en de vaders de naam Van de Velde of een patroniem gebruikten, vindt men deze priesterzonen bij hun doopinschrijvingen (mits aanwezig) doorgaans onder de naam of het patroniem van hun vader terug. De naam A Campo raakte bij de rest van de familie eerst in de loop van de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw in gebruik.
