Hilbert werkte in dienst van de gemeente Amsterdan bij het havenbedrijf waar hij laad- en loskranen bediende.
Tijdens zijn militaire dienstplicht met uitzending naar Indonesië kreeg hij de tip van z'n korporaal ..... om brieven te gaan uitwisselen met Adrie Breedijk uit Moerkapelle. Na thuiskomst uit Indonesië werd de kennismaking met Adrie voortgezet en ging hij in het weekend op de fiets vanuit Amsterdam regelmatig op pad naar Moerkapelle om bij z'n meisje te zijn. Op zondag terug naar Amsterdam had hij in Kwakel een deal gesloten met een uitbater om een flesje chocomel buiten te vinden om halverwege te kunnen pauzeren. De week erop werd dat dan weer afgerekend op zijn reis naar Moerkapelle.
Na zijn huwelijk met Adrie Breedijk en de verhuizing naar Rotterdam ging hij naar het havenbedrijf in Rotterdam over, weer op de kranen. Elke ochtend vertrok hij met een pak boterhammen en een fles warme thee met veel suiker, ingerold in dik kranten tegen het afkoelen, op de fiets naar z'n werk in de Botlek.
Later toen het werk op de kranen minder werd ging Hilbert werken op het gemeentehuis te Rotterdam als bode, wat hij tot aan zijn dood is blijven doen.
