Notes about Peter Getkate

Peter was a store assistant by occupation. He and Nellie, a native woman, lived as husband and wife in the native reserve. She was his common law wife, as he had paid the required lobola to her Father and had also paid the required "hut Taxes". On 16 November 1916 he applied to the Magistrate that be married by law. Although there was no law against mixed marriages, the request was denied. The magistrate wanted it to be an example to the natives not to marry people outside their own culture. (obtained from a letter at the archives in Pietermaritzburg) They did however get married in 1917 at the Weslyan Methodist Church in Idhlebe (Mahlabatini) Zululand.
