Notes about John Robert William Larkan

John was baptised by the Rev Annesby Strean at St Peter's, Athlone. He was educated at Flynns School, Dublin and matriculated in 1842.

After the family left their home "Larkfield" in 1872 they lived in Kilkenny.

On 31 October 1876 John, his wife and family, sisters Emma and Susan and half-brother George Larkan, left Kilkenny via Waterford & sailed to Southampton to embark a ship to sail to Durban, South Africa. They arrived in Natal on 11 December 1876. On 22 December 1876 they settled in the IfafaValley, Umzinto. In 1880 they formed a partnership and bought farms called«i» Antioch«/i» & «i»Ravenhill «/i»in the Ngabeni district near Harding in Natal. They also bought «i»Bont Rand«/i» for 640 pounds. The farm was 3,200 acres i.e. 4 shillings per acre.
