Koning van Frankrijk van 1226-1270, graaf van Macon 1239. In 1297 werd hij door paus Bonifatius VIII heilig verklaard. In de overtuiging dat de islamitische heerser van Tunis zich tot het christendom zou bekeren bij de aanblik van een leger kruisvaarders dat aan land ging, lanceerde Lodewijk IX de Achtste Kruistocht, die hem echter fataal zou worden. Een maand na zijn landing overleed hij op 56-jarige leeftijd vóór de wallen van Tunis aan de pest (tyfus is ook mogelijk).
