Hendrik Wilhelm Kiel was sergeant-majoor in het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL) en gelegerd op Borneo. Het eiland Borneo was voor de Japanners een belangrijk doelwit in verband met de daar aanwezige aardolie-installaties. De strijd om Borneo begon in de nacht van 10 op 11 januari 1942. De aardolie-installaties werden door de Nederlanders vernield. Op 9 maart capituleerde de KNIL. De resterende troepen gaven zich over. Een groep militairen van de KNIL was gevlucht vanaf de oostkust naar het centraal gelegen Long Nawan. Zij voegden zich daar bij eerder gevluchte Britten en Amerikaanse missionarissen. Op 20 augustus 1942 arriveerden in Long Nawan Japanse troepen. Op 26 augustus 1942 werden door de Japanners alle Europese mannen vermoord. Op 23 september 1942 werden de Europese vrouwen en kinderen door de Japanners vermoord. (Bron: Borneo - Indischekamparchieven). Op de erelijst van alle gevallen soldaten en verzetsleden in de tweede wereldoorlog staat voor Hendrik Wilhelm Kiel als overlijdensdatum 27 augustus 1942 vermeld (www.erelijst.nl).
Hendrik Wilhelm Kiel is begraven op het Nederlands ereveld Kembang Kuning te Surabaya in Indonesië. Het graf bevindt zich in vak DDD nummer 184 (bron: Oorlogsgravenstichting, www.ogs.nl). De begraafplaats is ingewijd op 8 maart 1947. Op het ereveld zijn ruim 5.000 slachtoffers begraven. Hendrik Wilhelm Kiel was eerst begraven in een verzamelgraf te Long Nawan.
