Herman van Salm werd op 6 augustus 1081 verkozen tot Duits tegenkoning. Onder een tegenkoning werd een koning verstaan, die - op grond van instabiele of onduidelijke machtsverhoudingen, of vanwege discutabele troonopvolging - tegenover een nog niet geïnstalleerde koning geplaatst werd, met als doel deze van de troon te houden. Tegenkoningen kwamen in de geschiedenis vooral voor in gebieden waar men opteerde voor verkozen monarchen, het systeem dat gehanteerd werd in het Heilige Roomse Rijk, tegenover erfelijke monarchen (bron: wikipedia.nl). Herman van Salm was tegenkoning tegenover Hendrik IV, koning van Duitsland (vanaf 1056) en keizer van het Heilige Roomse Rijk (vanaf 1084).
